8th + HOWARD

This 162 unit, two-complex project creates a warm, inviting environment for residents.  The design concept encourages visitors to approach the landscape as if walking on the ocean floor at the ground level.  AWA carried this concept throughout the structure "landscape," constructing edge planes, waves, and riparian structured plant materials.  The juxtaposition of deciduous, architectural Japanese maples that when bare in the winter, provide a metaphor of underwater sea coral forests.  This striking element interacts pleasingly with the black and buff colors of the building while providing color throughout the year.

8th & Howard/SOMA Studios has been level l shortlist for National ASLA Award.  It also received a National AIA Award for design.
