PALEGA COMMUNITY CENTER

& PLAYGROUND RENOVATION

Palega playground is situated on 5.78 acres in the Portola District in southeastern San Francisco.  The site houses a historic recreation center building, a play area, two baseball fields, and a large grassy area for flexible sports play which is frequently used for soccer.

While Mark Cavagnero Associates designed a modern extension and renovation to the existing historic recreation center, AWA was tasked with creating a seamless outdoor/indoor transition for the new addition.  We designed a new modern "porch" that connects the indoor basketball courts and rec areas to a new playground and outdoor basketball court.

Landscape improvements, based on modern interpretation of the Japanese View Gardens designed by AWA, not only retain and improve existing recreation uses, but also include the addition of new playground equiment and new outdoor "Corbusier" outdoor gathering areas.   A new palette of native plants replaced the existing damaged landscape.  Other plan components included more clearly defined entrances, a welcoming transition from park to surrounding neighborhood, and improved circulation (walking pathways) with lush drought tolerant flowering and foliage plants to enjoy.
