PROJECTS
OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL
AIRPORT GARAGE & ROADWAYS PROJECTS
The Oakland International Airport project included a potential new garage, roadways and terminal drop-off improvements, bioswale stormwater improvements associated with the new roadway circulation. The garage project initially included a three-football field length of plaza across from the terminal. AWA designed the plazas and coordinated with potential artists sculptures that would be included in the plazas.
The final project delayed the garage project but included low maintenance but highly visible landscape that would provide a signature "gateway" to the Oakland San Francisco Bay Area airport.
AWA designed the landscape with interactive broad bands of low maintenance grasses, punctuated with groupings of row trees.
At the plaza area adjacent to the terminal, the paving, landscape and site furniture were designed to present a unified composition with the proposed parking garage. Circular grid modules filled with grassy or scrubbed berms and circular benches created an oasis for weary traveler's shuffling between the terminal and garage.
AWA designed an advanced stormwater treatment system that channels runoff into plant-filled bioswales provided a natural filtration system that removes pollutants before the water reaches the San Francisco Bay.

TRANSPORTATION
YGNACIO VALLEY ROAD PROJECT
Our design is contemporary, made up of simple geometric lines and curves. Curved and straight planters surround the users in a serene space. These materials function as raised planters for shrubs and grasses on Level 2, creating a usable and interesting open space for the residents while also filtering stormwater runoff. We have three main function areas. One, a community gathering space surrounded by trees at grade level. Two, Rectangular tables, chairs and benches are close by the children's play area. Three, a playground area of play surfacing of mounds, nestle a climbing and train play structures. The "train" play structure pays homage to the Iron Horse historic train line nearby.
Street level trees and stormwater planters greet users with a corner entry of metal weathering planters to match the historic industrial heritage. Lush plants climb to the trellis and envelope a mini plaza.
