HUNTERS POINT SHIPYARD OPEN SPACE, NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS, AND POCKET PARKS PROJECTS

As the associate landscape architect, AWA provided landscape planting and irrigation services for the Open Space Park and Innes Park and full landscape design services for the Hillside Neighborhood Park and 5 Pocket Parks. The 64-acre housing development located in Hunter's Point Shipyard, the former naval base in San Francisco.

Challenging budgets, site constraints and grading focus the team on minimal designs complementary to the surrounding industrial waterfront site.  The scope of work includes presentations to SFRA, community groups and public/private developers.  Lennar and SFRA were co-developers.

The design of the open space park included large expanse of lawn overlooking the shipyard crane and drydocks.  This and other signature feature became inspiration for local artist community to provide sculptures integrated into the parks.

Large grade differences in AWA's pocket parks contributed to accessible pathway-park integrated designs with native drought tolerant plantings and community gathering spaces.

YGNACIO VALLEY ROAD PROJECT

Our design is contemporary, made up of simple geometric lines and curves.  Curved and straight planters surround the users in a serene space.  These materials function as raised planters for shrubs and grasses on Level 2, creating a usable and interesting open space for the residents while also filtering stormwater runoff.  We have three main function areas.  One, a community gathering space surrounded by trees at grade level.  Two, Rectangular tables, chairs and benches are close by the children's play area.  Three, a playground area of play surfacing of mounds, nestle a climbing and train play structures.  The "train" play structure pays homage to the Iron Horse historic train line nearby.

Street level trees and stormwater planters greet users with a corner entry of metal weathering planters to match the historic industrial heritage.  Lush plants climb to the trellis and envelope a mini plaza.
