LAKE MERRITT PARK
MASTER PLAN &
PHASE I IMPLEMENTATION

The Lake Merritt Park Master Plan commands a thorough comprehension of the complex social, cultural, ecological and historical factors that compose the lake environs.  The goals of the master plan included collaboration with community groups and organizations; development of park standards; wildlife habitat improvement; environmental considerations; landscape and irrigation design; and cost analysis.

After completing the Master Plan, AWA as associate landscape architecture firm, carried forward the lessons learned from the planning stages.  Designing simultaneously for people and wildlife was the key to improving an already ecologically rich and well-used resource.  Drawing from the existing Necklace of Lights that surrounds the entire lake, the concept for the planting at Lakeside Drive and Lakeshore Avenue is to create a Necklace of Wildlife by establishing clusters of Oak trees and native species of plants.

The intention of this necklace is to become part of a larger wildlife corridor for native animals and provide a visual connection for human users.  By using native species of trees and shrubs, the park becomes an educational tool for visitors, residents and students.

YGNACIO VALLEY ROAD PROJECT

Our design is contemporary, made up of simple geometric lines and curves.  Curved and straight planters surround the users in a serene space.  These materials function as raised planters for shrubs and grasses on Level 2, creating a usable and interesting open space for the residents while also filtering stormwater runoff.  We have three main function areas.  One, a community gathering space surrounded by trees at grade level.  Two, Rectangular tables, chairs and benches are close by the children's play area.  Three, a playground area of play surfacing of mounds, nestle a climbing and train play structures.  The "train" play structure pays homage to the Iron Horse historic train line nearby.

Street level trees and stormwater planters greet users with a corner entry of metal weathering planters to match the historic industrial heritage.  Lush plants climb to the trellis and envelope a mini plaza.
